▶ The Prestige and Dedication Behind the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie
The Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie is widely regarded as the pinnacle of international pastry competitions, demanding not only exceptional technical skill but also years of dedication and preparation. Founded in 1989 by Gabriel Paillasson, a recipient of the prestigious M.O.F. (Meilleur Ouvrier de France)-an honor awarded to the best artisans in France- together with Valrhona, this biennial event is now chaired by world-renowned pastry chef Pierre Hermé. The competition brings together elite national teams from around the world to showcase their mastery in sugar, chocolate, and ice artistry on a truly global stage. Each team is represented by specialists in these three disciplines, already masters in their respective crafts. The team is guided by a team leader (coach), who also serves as a judge during the competition.
Japan has participated since the inaugural event. In 2023, the team claimed its third victory after an eight-year hiatus. At the 2025 competition, the team wowed judges and audiences alike with a powerful presentation themed “The Land of the Rising Sun,” incorporating elements of Kabuki, sumo, and taiko drums, which are motifs that represent the spirit and tradition of Japanese culture. Their remarkable performance earned Japan its first-ever consecutive championship titles.
